Bullying is defined as a person being “exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself.” Cyberbullying is when those actions take place electronically, either through a cell phone or computer.
How many kids are subjected to cyberbullying each year?
According to StompOutBullying.org, three out of every seven teens — or 43 percent.
How do I know my child may be subjected to cyberbullying?
Watch for signs of emotional distress, changes in mood or behavior, falling grades and avoidance of school activities.
How can it be prevented?
Students can refuse to pass bullying messages along through text messages or social media sites; tell their friends to stop the act of cyberbullying; block communication with known cyberbullies or report the acts to a trusted adult, such as a parent, pastor, teacher or guidance counselor.
