1.Google gives a jolt to the online travel industry with its new flight search service. Starting December this year, Google place its flight search results as the top-most result when a user searches on flight details in US. Google searches such as 'NY to La' now yield a Google powered interactive chart of the cheapest airfares between the two cities. Google's flight tool links exclusively to airline websites. 2. ComScore has taken out a detailed report on social networking in 2011. It has very interesting findings to tell us. Social networking sites now reach 82% of the world's Internet population ages 15 and older that accessed the Web from a home or work computer, representing 1.2 billion users around the globe. Israel leads all the countries in the time spent on social networking sites which is 11 hours on an average. The report found that women are more spending more time on social networking sites, with females worldwide spending on average 6.5 hours versus 5 hours for men worldwide. Europe and Latin America were the most social regions, with women spending an average of 8.2 hours in both regions during October of 2011 at social networking sites. Mobile devices were also playing a key role in the growing use of social media. In the U.S. nearly one third (32%) of the total U.S. mobile population ages 13 and older reported accessing a social networking site at least once in October of 2011 via their phone. However, the ad revenue has not kept up with the growing usage of social networking sites as it attracts only 15% of the US dollars for ads.

2. A woman in Utah uses Facebook to rescue herself and her 17 months old son. She posted a status that she should be rescued from her house where she was made a hostage. Facebook was her only resort to communicate. The woman hid in a closet to use her laptop.

Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is going to be one of the first things Obama will have to deal with in 2012. SOPA and PIPA are proposed laws that would, among other things, give media companies significant new tools to police pirated online content that appears on Web sites hosted outside of U.S. borders. It would also require U.S. companies that link or do business with them in the normal course of operations — sites such as Google, Yahoo and eBay’s PayPal — to cease doing so. For instance, Google might be forced by the courts or U.S. law enforcement agencies to stop providing search links to BitTorrent sites that host pirated copies of major motion pictures and television shows. The militant group of Somalia, Shabab has opened a Twitter account. They are bragging recent attacks and taunting their enemies. They reject all the western practices like movies, haircuts and even blocked western aid for the famine stricken areas of Somalia. On the contrary, they have embraced Twitter. Twitter terrorism is the increasing trend and many groups of Al Qaeda are using social media sites like Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and Twitter. This helps them recruiting more people and raising funds.

There seems to be a Twitter war between the Kenyan army majors and Shabab's leaders. “Your inexperienced boys flee from confrontation and flinch in the face of death,” the Shabab wrote in a post to the Kenyan Army. The Kenyan army majors have are replied to them in a sarcastic manner quoting their use of donkeys for carrying weapons. Living up to their guerrilla spirit Shabab is not following anyone on Twitter.


The American government is extremely concerned about Shabab's account on Twitter. They might pass legal orders to shut their Twitter account.

2. Facebook has launched a new feature which enables the fans of the brand to send a private message to the page. Only the fans can initiate the conversation with the pages. This way no communication will be lost between brand and consumers. This might reduce the visibility in the news feed. When any fan writes on the brand page, it shows in the news feed and all the people on the person's network are able to see it. This gives publicity to the brands. If the fans start using this feature more then the brand's visibility will suffer. As of now this feature is opt-in for the admins and the page-owners. 

Air-Plane seating to be based on social media preferences

Sitting with people with common interests can make a long flight into an exciting experience. KLM’s latest plan to allow people to choose who they sit next to according to social media profiles sounds like fun in theory. The idea is to link your social media profile to your check-in information and choose a seating partner presumably with similar likes and dislikes. KLM's new seating tool will be called 'meet&seat' which will work with Facebook and Linkedin. The tool will be opt-in only.

KLM is not the first airline to tout the idea with Malaysia Airlines released a service on Facebook which enables passengers to see which friends might be taking the same flight or travelling to the destination around the same time – the obvious difference being that they already know each other. Users can also check to see where their friends are sitting and make sure a group can sit together, or as close as required. The seating information is only passed on to others if the users permits it. Virgin Atlantic has also mulled the idea of allowing people with similar likes on social media to be seated together.

There are start-ups, like Planely, who are toying with the idea of social flying. The idea is that passengers will give the website info on your flight, they will connect you with other Planely fliers.

You can see all the activity of your social media pages in social media hub. The social networking sites that are currently included in the social data hub are: Delicious, Digg, Diigo, Gigya, LiveFyre, ReadItLater, Vkontakte, Reddit, TypePad, Google+, Google Blogger, Google Groups. 2. Obama bans his daughters to join Facebook. The First Social Media president has banned his elder daughter, Malia, 13 to join Facebook. His concern is that he doesn't want to make his family life public. In an interview, the President described the thinking behind the Facebook ban as: "Why would we want to have a whole bunch of people who we don't know knowing our business? That doesn't make much sense."

Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Communications and IT, said that we already have the regulations in place under the IT act. 2. 'Like Store' selling 'Likes' for pages. Facebook has sent legal threats to the Israeli parent company I-share of 'Like Store' for their business. They artificially increase the number of likes on Facebook and have fake profiles for these reasons. The Facebook 'Like' competition seems to have become a real trade. 


I-share company (the parent company of the Like Store), responded by saying: “the ‘Like’ service, that we take part of, establishes content in exchange for “Likes”. That is, a user who wants to view certain content presses a button and under full consent and knowledge adds a “Like” to that page. Performing this operation is not violation of Israeli law.” They claimed that Facebook is trying to secure them out of insecurity and blamed Facebook for unscrupulous usage of user information.

Human psychology behind social media's success

Its a need for humans to be popular and liked by a large group of people. You might not want to talk to many people but messaging is a good way of keeping relationships alive. You are connected to the whole world by just logging onto the social media networks. You don't really have to talk to everyone but you are still connected.

1. China protests in a village, Wukan has been removed from the web. The Chinese government has taken control over the web content and blocked all search material on revolt happening at Wukan. Users of Sina Weibo, the country's Twitter-like micro-blogging site, say searches for Wukan return no results.  Instead a message appears saying, "According to relevant law, regulations and policies, search results for Wukan cannot be displayed."


The dispute is that the local government has confiscated the land of villagers and selling it to the developers. The revolt has intensified when Xue Jingbo who was negotiating on behalf of the village with the authorities, died in police custody.


2. The much awaited Facebook IPO is going to create millionaires. People familiar with Facebook say that even by conservative estimates there are likely to be well over a thousand people at million-dollar-plus paydays after the company goes public. One of the Facebook employees that he expects his shares to be worth $50 million if the company is valued at $100 billion. He plans to fulfil his childhood dream of space travel when gets that money.

Facebook to prevent suicides via live chat

Suicidal expressions have been seen on Facebook before taking any further action. Last month, authorities in Pittsburg, Calif., said a man posted a suicide note on Facebook before he killed his wife and in-laws then himself. Facebook launched its live chat service to prevent suicides last week. The service will provide an instant messaging chat with the crisis counselor. The tracking system is not based on algorithms. The friends of the user with suicidal thoughts on their profile can report it to Facebook next to the comment. Facebook then sends an email to the person who posted the suicidal comment encouraging them to call the hotline or click on a link to begin a confidential chat.

Google and Yahoo show the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline numbers as the first result when anyone searches on suicidal topics. Facebook live chat is supposed to be more effective. "The science shows that people experience reductions in suicidal thinking when there is quick intervention," said Lidia Bernik, associate project director of Lifeline. “We’ve heard from many people who say they want to talk to someone but don’t want to call. Instant message is perfect for that." “One of the big goals here is to get the person in distress into the right help as soon as possible,” Fred Wolens, public policy manager at Facebook. The Lifeline crisis centre counselors will be available 24 hours for the live chat.

The initiative illustrates Facebook’s growing sense of responsibility for users’ lives.

1. RIP Deriek Crouse. People have shown great support for the police officer, Deriek Crouse, 39 who was shot by a nearby university pupil at a traffic light last week. The gunman killed himself and was found dead in a nearby parking lot. The victim, Deriek Crouse, has left his wife and five children behind. Many people have turned to social media to express their support for him and his family. Condolences have been sent in the form of tweets, Facebook comments and pictures.
Meanwhile, organizers of the "Hokies for Crouse," have gained a lot of support through social media. In just days the site has gained more than 40,000 followers, raising more than $70,000 for the memorial fund in Crouse's honor.

Introducing - Alexey Navalny

Social media has empowered the citizens of one more country 'Russia.'  There have been protests against Putin's rule, as president from 2000 to 2008 and as prime minister since then, but have rarely drawn more than about 200 people. This time Putin's victory was openly claimed to be rigged. Just as this news spread on social media, protesters and opposition forces used Twitter for updates. Facebook was used to announce the protest. The impact was huge and the elections have been called for a re-run.

Alexei Anatolievich Navalny born June 4, 1976 is a Russian political and social activist who is, also, an active blogger. He organizes petitions by Russian citizens on issues mainly related to heavy corruption in Russia. In this latest protest, he offered his blog as a clearing house for evidence of election violations. His blog claimed the issue of DDoS (Distributed denial of service) attacks, in which the Russian citizens were denied network access and got many media websites shut. He played a key role in this social media led Russian revolt against Putin.

New media, and the protests have helped strengthen Navalny, 35, into a much more potent opposition force. Until now he has been an informal leader of the disenchanted, campaigning online against corruption and showed nationalist tendencies. But his jail sentence on Tuesday could turn him into a symbol and leader of the protests.

In a tiny courtroom where he was sentenced to 15 days in jail for obstruction of justice during Monday's protest, Navalny said the Kremlin would seek to silence anyone who spread the word about what he said was obvious vote-rigging. "The elections were falsified," Navalny, looking exhausted and angry, told Reuters. "The very acknowledgement of this fact will be deadly for the regime, and they will do their utmost to shut the mouths of everyone who talks about it openly," said Navalny, looking gaunt and without laces in his dirty boots. He has also challenged Putin directly, accusing him of ruling a corrupt elite as "chairman of the board of Russia Inc." and branded his party "swindlers and thieves."

Young tech entrepreneur, Amit Gupta, founder of photojojo has turned to social media for bone marrow donation. Amit Gupta is 32 years old, settled in the US and got diagnosed with acute leukemia. He has a slim chance of 1 in 20,000 for bone marrow transplant in US. He has turned to social media friends on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr for looking for a bone marrow donor to save his life. Through social media networks his friends are able to organize swab parties at tech centres like Google and Facebook. A swab party is a place where prospective donors swab the inside of their cheek to collect DNA and get registered for bone marrow donation. They can only donate when their DNA matches with the person in need. Once on the registry, donors are kept in the system until they age out at 61, and can be called at any time if their marrow matches that of a patient in need.


The social media network has become so strong that people unknown to Amit have organised swab parties in Indian temples and cultural centers. Many people have come and enrolled themselves for this cause. The doctors are saying that Amit will get a donor from the people enrolled till November 30. Still, the swab parties are on for him.

Kiran Rao & Baby Boy Trending On Twitter Trends

Twitter apparently was trending Kiran Rao, Baby Boy and IVF. I was curious about these trending topics until I found that Aamir and Kiran have been blessed with a baby boy through surrogate. The power of social media, yet again. 

The news trickled through a tweet from the producer, Kunal Kohli, which said "Congrats Aamir and Kiran. Lots of love to you and your lil baby boy. So happy for all 3 of you." The couple have been very open about IVF as the method of conception through a surrogate mother which has been appreciated by media. The news took the whole industry by surprise, especially because Kiran had been spotted at different events without the least hint of a baby bump. The couple announced that they had to chose this method because of medical reasons. Kiran had gone through a miscarriage before this.


"It gives us the greatest joy to share with you the good news of the birth of our baby boy. This baby is especially dear to us because he was born to us after a long wait and some difficulty. Due to medical complications, we were advised to have a baby through IVF-surrogacy, and we feel very grateful to the Almighty that all has gone well. We are humbled by the greatness of God, the miracles of science, and the kindness and love of our families and friends in being there for us while respecting our privacy. We seek your good wishes and blessings for our child," said the statement from the couple.

1. Kapil Sibal wants to completely curb the freedom of communication of internet users in India. According to a post on the blog of NY times, Kapil Sibal - India's telecommunication minister, met the high officials of all the internet majors - Microsoft, Yahoo, Google and Facebook to discuss the issue of pre-screening the user content from India before it is published online. The companies seem to be reluctant on this because it  would be very difficult to pre-screen every post from India. Google has 100 million users from India and Facebook has 25 Indian million users. The Indian government is planning to set up their own monitoring agency to pre-screen the online material. They are also planning to make policies for screening the content.

This raises many question on freedom of speech and transparency on the world's largest democracy. 


2. Google over-protective about its core business - search. 

Google is launching its product shipping business. 40% of Google revenue comes from retail stores. Amazon has become a very strong search engine for product search. Users say that they only go to Google for product search if they don't find a particular product on Amazon. Google is strengthening its product search and providing its users shipping in a day or two. It is tying up with third - party retailers (they have contacted Macy's) for products and is planning to create its own shipping.








Google is doing this to prove itself in product search. When YouTube became the ideal for searching videos, Google bought it. Yelp became the search engine for local places, it launched Google Places. The Android phone is majorly invented to cover the mobile search market. This time its going to compete with the biggest online retailer - Amazon.

2. Twitter partners with Mixi - Japan's biggest social networking site. Japan is the second biggest market for Twitter after US. Twitter has created a big impact in Japan . Twitter had the maximum number of visitors (14.3 million) in Japan in October. Facebook was had 11.3 million visitors and  Mixi ranked number three in the number of visitors (8.4 million) in Japan.

Introducing Sean Parker!

Sean Parker is often referred as 'tech titan' and 'playboy billionaire'. The New Media is going to cover both the sides of our 1st guest personality. The best way to start Sean Parker's introduction is through the movie 'The Social Network'. You can recall Justin Timberlake who portrayed Sean Parker in the movie. Although he was not very happy with the way his character was shown and says he is taking care of his image.

Lets begin with 'Sean Parker - The Tech Titan.' Sean started young as he learnt programming from his father who was a scientist while he was in second grade. His passion for coding was very obvious when he wrote a letter to his school authorities requesting to count his time spent on coding in the computer lab as his foreign language class. His hobby was hacking and programming in his teens. Sean is a born entrepreneur because he started earning $80,000 from various projects while he was in high school. He convinced his parents to skip his way through high school education and pursue entrepreneurship as his career. Steven Bertoni, a journalist with Forbes spent a day with him in September this year. He says Sean is not traditional and one cannot contain him in a day. He is not a 9 - 5 type of a man. He is all about ideas. If he has an idea he would not isolate himself for days and resurface once he has a vision on it. Sean is a perfectionist. When he was in school he would not give in his paper if he wasn't satisfied with it. He said he would rather get an 'f' grade than give a mediocre paper. His excitement about perfectionism is contagious.

The first product which he created was 'Napster' which was a free music file - sharing service. This attracted huge number of users within a year and became a hit in USA. This service was eventually shut after it was opposed by all the big recording labels. Parker helped found and manage Plaxo which was first product which had viral design in-built. It got acquired by private investors. In 2004 he came across 'thefacebook' and he could identify the potential it had to make it big. He was the founding president at Facebook till 2005 and since then has been on its board. He then worked with Causes, a social networking way to raise funds for charity. Presently, he is working as the director at Spotify to live his vision about online music which he started with Napster.


“Sean was pivotal in helping Facebook transform from a college project into a real company,” Mark Zuckerberg says in an e-mail. “Perhaps more importantly, Sean helped ensure that anyone interested in investing in Facebook would not only buy into a company, but also a mission and vision of making the world more open through sharing.”


Steven Bertoni doesn't agree with Sean's image portrayed in the movie 'The Social Network.' He  doesn't come across as a party boy but spends a lot of time visualizing his ideas. Sean Parker's vision is not to own on company but have his mark on various products/companies  and move from division to division. 

'The Playboy Billionaire' has a net worth of $2.1 billion at the age of 31. Parker shelled out $20 million for a sixty - story, five floor, 8,500 - square - foot West Village townhouse. He boasts three assistants, a driver and private - jet jaunts. He drives a $100,000 electric sports car and owns an arsenal of custom Tom Ford suits. Parker's hair stylist is Ruben Colon at Sally Hershberger's slon who charges at modest $250 per cut. He is known for doing great booze and drug parties at his house. Although people have not seen him do drugs but supplies of it at his parties are found. 


Parker's impulsiveness is shown in his relationships, he got engaged to Alexander Lenas after six months of knowing her. Sean can amaze you with his crazy habbits. He likes to blind order things on Amazon and be thrilled at what comes. He likes dining in the middle of the night by specially waking up the chefs. He seems to very fond of Sushi. He likes taking unknown calls just out of curiosity.
